If you are looking for a toaster oven that does a great job of toasting bread, heating up leftovers, and cooking foods that aren’t very big, then the Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven just might be the perfect machine for you. It toasts, bakes, and broils, and heats up quickly.
This is a great toaster oven for people with small kitchens, or college students in dorms or apartments. It would also be a good wedding gift for young couples just embarking on their lives together. It is also right for people who don’t like a lot of complicated features.
The overwhelming majority of people who own this model have heaped loads of positive comments on it. As an entry level toaster oven, it deserves all the praise that it has received.
2018 Update: This model is no longer being sold on Amazon. You can see the updated model instead, the Black & Decker TO1322SBD.
Dimensions and Appearance
Exterior Dimensions
Interior Dimensions
These are approximate interior dimensions. There are no official interior dimensions listed anywhere, but consumers on Amazon kindly provided dimensions to people who asked. The above figures are the overall consensus of what the size is internally.
The door is installed on the front in a way that slopes down, so that the interior is wider at the bottom than the top. Black & Decker did this so that there is more room inside for a pizza or other wide foods. I suspect this also helps the inside heat up quicker and hold on to its heat, since the curved means there is less space to heat inside.
Food Capacity
- Toast Quantity = 4, but it can be a tight fit depending on the size of your bread
- Bagel Quantity = Unknown, but given that it fits four slices of bread, I suspect you can fit two halves of a bagel
- Baking Dish Size =Unknown, but the baking tray is 7″ x 8 1/4″ so you should be able to fit a 7.5″ x 7.5″ dish
- Pizza Size = 9 inches or one to two slices, depending on their size
- Open-Faced Sandwiches =Unknown
- Chicken Size = You cannot cook a chicken in here, but you can cook a Cornish game hen

Weight
2.8 pounds
Stop for a moment and think about what you just read. This is a toaster oven that weighs just under three pounds. Three pounds! Young cats weigh more than this toaster oven does. You can easily pick up this toaster oven and move it without hurting your back.
Exterior Housing Material
Stainless steel that has a brushed chrome look.
Exterior Color
The front of the machine is stainless steel, while the sides and top are black. The combination of steel and black gives this toaster oven a nice, modern look, one that many people spoke positively about.
Cord Length
Cord length is 24 inches
The cord is approximately two feet long. That is a fairly short cord, and at least one review mentioned using an extension cord. If your kitchen is lacking on kitchen outlets then you may want to get a small extension cord. Extension cords can be as short as 8″, and go up from there.
Plug Prongs
The TO1332SBD toaster oven plug has three prongs, meaning the plug is grounded and will protect you from an electrical shock. It also means that the cord cannot be plugged into two prong outlets. If your kitchen has only two prong electrical outlets you will need to add a plug converter before you can plug this in and use it.
Cooking Features
Convection
This does not include a convection oven.
Heating Elements
2 elements
There are a total of two heating elements on the Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven – one on the top and one on the bottom. Four elements is common among toaster ovens, but as I said with the watts, more than two elements would be overkill. The elements heat up quickly, and they make perfect toast.
Over and over again I read reviews stating that consumers love how quickly this machine heats up, and how nicely it toasts bread. This may be a low end model, but it works very well. There is no need for you to flip your toast over in the middle of cooking to ensure complete cooking, which is the case with other low end toaster ovens.
Black & Decker has included something called “Even Toast Technology” on this toaster. According to B&D, this allows bread to toast up to 30% more evenly than competing toaster ovens. I’m not sure how it works, but the many positive comments about this toaster oven’s ability to make great toast shows that it works.
Rack Positions
There is only one place to insert the rack, which is not surprising given the height of this toaster oven. There is no need to place the rack any higher within the interior.
Rotisserie
This does not include a rotisserie.
Temperature Range
Warm to 450° F
The temperature ranges from warm up to 450° F. The wide temperature range means you can warm up leftovers, as well as cook, bake, and broil.
Toast Temperature vs. Cooking Temperature
This toaster oven has just one temperature option. You will need to select the temperature for anything you cook, including toast. This is the way my toaster oven is and it doesn’t bother me at all. Just keep in mind that you will want to check the temperature setting before you start your toast, just to make sure it isn’t going to burn instead of brown.
Exterior Temperature During Cooking
As is true with any toaster oven, the exterior does get hot during cooking. Opinions varied as to whether or not the outside got hot enough to burn. Some people said it wasn’t too hot, while others said it was. Given that this is a machine that works by getting hot on the inside, I recommend that you use minimize touching the outside while in use. This is something that I believe to be true, regardless of the toaster oven you use.
Warming Tray
There is no warming tray function on the Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven. In fact, there are vents on top that need to remain uncovered, so you should not place anything on top of it.
Watts
1150 watts
Although the wattage on the Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven is on the low end of most toaster ovens, it really isn’t necessary for this model to have more. The unit is fairly small and heats up quickly. Multiple reviewers said how pleased they are with how fast this oven heats up and cooks. Any more watts would be overkill.
Controls And Settings
LCD DIsplay
There is no LCD display.
Type OF Controls
The B&D TO1332SBD toaster oven is controlled by two knobs. The top knob is for temperature selection, while the bottom knob is for toasting and the timer. Both knobs are easy to turn, and have arrow heads on one end that you use to select a setting.
The temperature knob has temperatures listed in both Celsius and Fahrenheit degrees, so there is no need to convert the temperature if you prefer to cook using Celsius.
The timer knob allows you to set the timer, or choose a toast setting. The toast setting is the first 10 minutes of the timer. The timer knob also has an “stay on” option, which you access by turning it all the way to the left. You do need to be careful with this feature because if you turn the knob just a bit too far when turning it off, you may unintentionally turn it to “stay on.”
Temperature Control Options
The controls on this unit are manual. That means you have total control over the temperature and timer settings.
Toast Darkness Adjustment
The toast darkness setting is part of the timer knob. The first 10 minutes of the timer are dedicated to toasting, and you can see pictures of light and dark pieces of toast to give you an idea of where to set the knob.
You will need to play around with the timer control until you get a feel for how long you need to toast your bread. The good news is that this machine is user friendly, so it shouldn’t take you long to figure out how far to turn the knob.
Preset Cooking Functions
There are no preset cooking functions.
Timer
There is a 30 minute timer. You can use this timer for toast or anything else that takes 30 minutes or less to cook. You can still cook food that takes longer than 30 minutes by turning the timer knob to the “stay on” setting. In this case you will need to use a kitchen timer to know when your food is done. You will also need to manually turn off the machine.
When the timer is on you will hear a ticking sound. The sound is not loud, and at least one review commented about how the ticking is a benefit because it tells you that the oven is on. Be aware, though, that there will be no ticking sound if you turn the oven to “stay on” instead of using the 30 minute timer.
Additional Features
Alarm
There is an alarm that dings when timed cooking is done. Everyone who commented on the alarm agrees that it is not too loud.
Automatic Shutoff
If you use the timer then the machine will turn off when the countdown reaches zero. However, I am unsure if there is an automatic shutoff feature when you set it to “stay on”. I have contacted Black & Decker about this and will let you know what they say.
Auto-Eject Rack
There is no auto-eject rack. This was a minor annoyance for a few people, but most people don’t mind since the lack of this rack helps keep the cost down.
BPA FREE?
I do not know at this time if all parts that come in contact with food are BPA free. I have contacted Black & Decker about this and will let you know what they tell me.

Crumb Tray
There is a pullout crumb tray. To be honest, I was surprised that the Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven has a pullout crumb tray because of the low price, instead of one that opens from the bottom. The ability to pull out a tray and clean off crumbs and drippings is a must-have feature for most people.
Door
The door is made of glass and has a handle that allows you to open the door without getting burned.
Handles
There are no handles on the side of the exterior. You will need to wait for the unit to completely cool before moving it, which will be easy because this is such a light weight machine.
In Use Light
There is an “in use” light, located above both control knobs. The light will remain on whenever the Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven is in use. This is a very important feature, especially since it is possible to unintentionally turn the timer knob to “stay on” instead of off. I suggest that you get in the habit of looking at the “in use” light any time you are done cooking, just to make sure the machine is, in fact, off.
Interior Light
There is no interior light.
Nonstick Interior
I was unable to find information about what the inside material is made of for the Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven. It is possible that it is the same stainless steel as the outside. Whatever the material is, I did learn that it is not nonstick. None of the internal parts are nonstick, but I wouldn’t expect them to be at for such a basic toaster oven.
Under Counter Mount
This model cannot be mounted under a cabinet.
Accessories
Included Accessories
- Wire Rack
- Cooking Tray / Drip Tray
The wire rack is flat, unlike some wire racks that dip down and can be placed in either the down or up position. There is only one way to insert this wire rack.
The cooking tray measures 7″ by 8 1/4″. The cooking tray can be placed underneath the wire rack, above the heating element, to catch food and grease. You can line the tray with aluminum foil to make cleaning it simple.
The Black & Decker TO1332SBD toaster oven does not sit flush on the counter. Instead, there are rubber feet that raise the machine up an inch or so. I don’t know if Black & Decker did this intentionally or not, but there is just enough room underneath the toaster oven to place the cooking tray when not in use. I love that you can do this, and wish I could do the same with my toaster oven! This means you don’t need to store the tray inside the oven.
Optional Accessories
There are no additional accessories available for this model.

I regret that I was unable to find a video of this toaster.

Customer Support Experience
Of all the reviews that I read, not a single person mentioned needing to contact Black & Decker about a warranty issue. What surprised me, though, is that Black & Decker reads every review and responds whenever people mention any type of problem they had with this toaster oven. Not only do the B&D representatives respond to these comments, but they also provide contact information and a reference number to each person, so they can get help from the company.
That is very impressive! How many companies can you think of that respond to problems on a site that they do not own? Given the fact that Black & Decker cares enough about their customers to respond to comments, I suspect that they are also responsive to warranty claims and inquiries.
Pros
- Price – You won’t pay very much for this model.
- Size – It is fairly small and fits nicely in kitchens that have limited space.
- Weight – This model is very light and easy to move.
- Heats quickly – You won’t have to wait a long time to make toast or preheat for cooking.
- Crumb tray – Cleaning up after cooking is super simple with the removable crumb tray.
- Intuitive design – You won’t need to constantly refer to the manual to use it.
Cons
- Size – Because this is a smaller toaster oven, you will be limited to the types and quantities of food you can put inside it. Size is subjective, though, and I encourage you to measure it out on your counter to make sure you have room for it.
- Cord length – The cord is rather short and some people may need to get an extension cord.
- Not many features – This is a basic toaster oven that does not have many features. But what it does, it does very well.
Price
*
This is one of the lowest priced toaster ovens that you can buy. Do not let the price scare you off, though. The price may be low, but it is quality made and reliable.
Customer Reviews & Ratings
As of this writing, this is the second bestselling toaster oven on Amazon. That speaks volumes for this humble little toaster oven. Almost every review written by consumers expressed happiness about this toaster, and love how easy it is to use.
People love the small size, and how well it toasts bread. They also love the quality, which many people don’t expect in a toaster at this price. They also like how simple and intuitive the controls are.

Final Thoughts
There was not a lot of information on the Internet for this specific toaster oven, which I think is a shame. This little work horse of an appliance has proved itself to be reliable, and is a bestselling model. It proves that you do not need a lot of features to be popular as long as you do what you are supposed to do, and do it well.
If you want a toaster oven that has a nice variety of features, take a look at the Cuisinart TOB-40. But, if a basic toaster oven that makes a mean piece of toast and doesn’t cost a lot of money sounds appealing to you, then the Black & Decker TO1332SBD just might be the right toaster for you.

I am confused about where to place the trays ! Describe exactly which is crumb tray, baking tray etc and where to place them THNX
Amy says
This toaster oven is a little different than most others and I suspect this is causing your confusion. The best image for you to look at is the first one seen under the “Accessories” section.
There is only one place for the wire rack to go and there are notches under the wire rack for you to place the baking tray when you want to broil food so that it catches the drippings. This turns the baking tray into a broiler rack. When you want to bake then you place the baking tray on top of the wire rack.
The crumb tray is on the bottom of the oven and slides out for cleaning. There is no picture of the crumb tray.
I hope this helps.

My current Black & Decker just died after ten good years. It seemed to have a couple of nice features that this one lacks: plastic exterior (didn’t get too hot to touch); separate control for toast; auto shut-off when door opened.
Well, things change, I suppose. But the old one is mounted under my upper cabinets. Does this model mount under-counter?
Amy says
No, this model cannot be mounted. However, Black & Decker recently started selling a mountable toaster oven again, which you can see by clicking here.
John Munyan says
My experience with this B&D toaster Oven is different from yours because I use it slightly differently. I toast an English muffin while I am cooking an egg in the morning. And then, my wife does the same. The first muffin comes out fine – but the second muffin takes forever because once the oven is heated up to its maximum temperature (despite the toast setting being on) the heating element turns off (cycling on every so often) and the oven dries out the second muffin rather than toasting it. I had thought that using the “Toast” setting would override the control that turns off the heating element but it does not. And this is my second one of these toaster ovens. The first one behaved the same way. I was hoping for better. The older models did not have this design flaw.
Don says
I just purchased this toaster oven and so far am happy with it. However, I can’t find any information on how to ‘preheat’ the oven to a specific temperature (eg. 450) before beginning to bake the food. Can this only be accomplished by adding X minutes to the timer with the food in the oven on Bake?
Amy says
Yes, you can do that. What you can do is get an oven thermometer (you can find them in your local grocery store) and put it in the toaster oven. Keep an eye on the thermometer as it heats till it gets close to the desired temperature, then put your food in. It shouldn’t take long before you figure out how much time to add for preheating. The other option is to skip the thermometer and add about five minutes to your timer for preheating. Then, keep an eye on whatever you are cooking to make sure it isn’t over-or-under-cooked. I hope this helps.
